About the Split Bed Pool-Cue Lathe
What we have offered to our pool cue manufacturers to date is our spliced bed lathe in a 48″ length. One of our customers (Bentley Custom Cues) requested a split bed lathe setup. The primary advantage of the split bed over the spliced bed lathe is cost. This Split Bed Lathe setup allows custom pool cue makers the ability to adjust the distance between the headstock and the tailstock, depending on the length of the stock being turned, without the expense of ordering a custom extended lathe bed.
Most of our pool cue lathes are not true lathes in the standard definition; they are being used as a motorized turning axis mounted to a CNC router. Because all two-piece pool cue sections are mostly the same length, and the cutting/turning tool is not connected to our lathe bed, the center section of our spliced bed is never used. With the split-bed design, the headstock attachment bed is mounted to your CNC Router table. Then you mount the tailstock attachment bed at a given distance away from the bed that will work best for your pool cue length.
Both beds get the bottom ground to the same overall thickness within .002″ of each other. The end-user must then position the beds on his router table and indicate them in so they align with each other. Each bed section comes with (3) 10-32 x 1.0″ SHCS to secure the bed to your table.
The stock is held between the Pool Cue Live Center in the tailstock and either a Spur Driver or a 2.5″, 3-Jaw Chuck on the headstock.
